Youngstown State — Style of Play Analysis
Youngstown State finished 5th nationally in raw overall offensive efficiency last season.
The Penguins had one of the most efficient offenses in college hoops last year so I decided to take whatever film I could find and take a closer look.
Here’s a video that breaks down some of their actions/concepts:
And here are a few diagrams of sets they ran last season:
Here are some things I noticed:
- they sometimes would legitimately have 5 guys on the floor who could shoot it from outside
- they ran sets with purpose (and based on scout/specific time of game/score)
- they ran plenty of sets, but they also gave their players a lot of freedom within those sets
- they weren’t afraid to push — and keep the ball — in transition as the play developed
Hopefully you got something from this super quick look into Youngstown State — whether it was an idea/concept to implement into your style of play, a set play to add, or a video clip to share with your players.
Until next time!
